Pietro Annigoni

Pietro Annigoni, one of the most famous Italian painters of the twentieth century, was born in Milan on 7 June 1910.
Driven by a very strong desire to know, Annigoni will become a man of vast culture, as well as a brilliant artist.

In the 1930s Pietro Annigoni created a large number of drawings and works that reflect his world. Among these: portraits of friends, people he meets in taverns or on the street, interiors, still lifes. In his style one can find Dalì in his surreal backgrounds and Caravaggio in the chiaroscuro of some works.

Nonconformist, of liberal ideas, contrary to any form of totalitarianism, committed to the affirmation of his vision of painting, Pietro Annigoni signs together with others the Manifesto of the "Modern Painters of Reality".

His style highlights the influence of the Italian Renaissance and Realism, in direct contrast to the portrait styles of Modernism and Postmodernism. Born in a century of great revolutions and protests, he used his technical skills to create gigantic works. But also tiny engravings, portraits, landscapes and large allegorical compositions. Now an established artist all over the world, the magazine "Time" has dedicated seven covers to him. Pietro Annigoni has been able to gather around him artists who are very different from each other and are now established. Among these: Luciano Guarnieri, Marcello Tommasi, Romano Stefanelli, Fernando Berardini, Silvestro Pistolesi, Antonio Ciccone, Luigi Falai and many others. After a long illness, Pietro Annigoni died on 28 October 1988 in Florence.
