Abraham Ortelius

One of the greatest geographers and cartographers of the century. XVI, Abraham Ortelius (or also Abramo Ortelio) was born in Antwerp on 4 April 1527 to a family originally from Augusta and died in Antwerp on 28 January 1598.

Ortelio can be considered as one of the founders of historical geography, to which he also contributed with one of his own Itinerarium for nonnullas Galliae Belgicae partes published in 1584, while, as an author of modern maps, his fame is mainly due to the fact that he was the first to compose a real atlas, which replaced the less organic Italian collections of modern maps.
